Bakeware Buying Guide

Baking can be a truly happy experience, bringing back memories from childhood, thanks to our olfactory senses. From cakes, muffins, meat pies, and lasagne to breads, pancakes, tarts, and brownies, baking can be a fun thing to do, especially if you and your family are food-lovers.

However, baking can be a cruel pastime and when results don’t go according to plan, such as a case of a cake not rising or having a soggy bottom, it is particularly annoying. But this may not be your fault. As Delia Smith said: “….there is a lot of pile-it high, sell-it-cheap rubbish out there, that claims to be baking equipment…” and “…tin size is where 99% of cake making goes wrong….”

Hence, to avoid turning a great dish into a heartrending failure, here are a few tips and pointers that will help you select the ideal bakeware.

The Materials

Bakeware comes in various sizes, shapes and materials. Each material will have a varying effect on the dish. Some of the materials available are anodized aluminium, silicon, non-stick, glass, stainless steel, stone and tinned steel.

Hard Anodised and Silver Anodised bakeware – for those who bake regularily.

Anodized aluminium comes in two varieties- silver anodized and hard anodized. Made of aluminium through an electro-chemical process, which hardens its outer surface, anodized bakeware is rust, peel and blister resistant, and is highly durable. Hard anodized bakeware is ten times harder and hence more durable than silver anodized, but both are excellent conductors of heat, owing to the presence of aluminium. This property ensures quick and even heating, essential when wanting the best results when baking and it is generally agreed that this type of bakeware is amongst the best available. Furthermore, both can be used on the hob. However, as with most high quality cookware there is a slight downside. Avoid using sharp knives on anodized bakeware as this might lead to scoring and this kind of bakeware is not dishwasher friendly. You will have to hand-wash it with hot soapy water. Food particles on its surface can be removed by soaking it in water.

Checkout the wide range of silver and hard anodized bakeware such as pans, trays, moulds and dishes from Silverwood, or take a look at the hard anodized bakeware from Mermaid.

Silicon Bakeware

Oven, microwave and freezer friendly Silicon bakeware is comparatively a new addition to the kitchen range, but has caught on soon enough because of its easy storage capability and durable nature. With a capacity to withstand temperatures ranging from 40 to 580 degrees F, silicon bakeware transfers heat to the food without absorbing it. The second food is out of the oven, the bakeware stops the cooking process, avoiding further browning at the bottom or edges. Flexible and bendable and made from silicone, silicon bakeware is mostly used as moulds and can be used in dishwashers, freezers and microwaves making them extremely versatile. However, when putting them in the oven, it is likely you will need at least a traditional baking tray to put the mould on and you can’t use them on the hob. Jamie Oliver and Bakers Pride have an assortment of moulds for muffins, loaves, cakes, and tarts.

Non Stick Bakeware

Non-stick bakeware can be made of both aluminium and steel, but characteristically has a non-stick coating applied to allow food to be easily removed from it. Such a bakeware is suitable for baking items like layered cakes, cupcakes or muffins where the food has to be served after removing it from the baking dish. This bakeware can provide excellent results, but the non-stick coating will wear with use and hence lose it’s performance over time and they can be susceptible to hot spots. Anolon and Bakers Pride series of bakeware include loaf pans, cake tins, pizza pans, roasting pans, muffin cups and springform pans of the non-stick variety. If you are someone who does not do too much baking and do not want the expense of the hard anodised and silver anodised bakeware, this may well be the solution for you.

Types of Bakeware

There are several types of bakeware available. The most basic is the baking dish, available both in square and rectangular varieties. It is a versatile bakeware in which you can cook a range of dishes like lasagne, roasts, poultry, fish, etc. Another simple bakeware is the cake pan that comes in rectangular, square and round shapes, meant for cakes and savoury dishes.

Baking sheets or cookie sheets are flat metal sheets with one or two turned ends and are used to bake cookies, biscuits, meringues etc. Bread pans or loaf pans, as the name suggests, are meant to bake breads or meat loaves.

Bundt pans are heavy-walled with decorative indented curvature and a hollow tube in the centre for uniform rising and baking of cakes. Generally used to make coffee cakes or sweet cakes, the bakeware is turned upside down for the cake to fall out into a decorative shape with a golden crust. Doughnut pans are shaped to bake doughnuts, and muffin tins, cups and pans for baking muffins.

There are numerous other baking wares such as flan pans, brioche pans, French bread pans, jelly roll pans, pie plates, shortbread pans, popover pans, tart pans, tube pans and springform pans.

The choice is endless, and all you have to do is decide what to buy, depending on what you need. Prices will purely depend on the quality each bakeware offers plus the number of pieces you purchase. Hard anodized is the most expensive, followed by silver anodized and silicon, and in reality that reflects the quality of the product. Finally, make sure when you don’t have the most suitable bakeware for a particular dish, go for one that is closest to the size of the ideal baking dish. This ensures even cooking and therefore, the best results.

From One Cup Coffee Makers to ?smart? Refrigerators: Kitchen Appliances Catch Up With the Speed of Life

The modern kitchen would not be complete without a refrigerator, an oven, a microwave, and a coffee maker. As fixtures in one of the most important rooms in the house, these appliances are on the forefront of the battle for greater convenience and lower energy costs. Here is a look at a few of the technological makeovers which can help you save both time and money.

“Smart” Refrigerators

Has this ever happened to you? On your way home from work, you stop at the supermarket for groceries. While picking up food for dinner, you can’t remember whether there’s a stake in the freezer or if you still have enough butter for the mashed potatoes. Instead of placing a call to your significant other, let your refrigerator check the inventory for you.

Using a cell phone, it is possible to remotely access an up-to-the-minute list of the contents of the “smart” refrigerator via an Internet connection. LG Electronics’ Internet Refrigerator is capable of alerting its user when a product has expired. The potential for this technology is enormous, but the limited availability of online grocery services has slowed its spread. Manufacturers hope to eventually develop a system by which refrigerators will not just keep tabs on the food inside, but will make lists of what is needed and automatically place an order with online grocers.

One drawback of the current technology is the effort that goes into keeping your refrigerator’s records up-to-date. As the refrigerator is stocked, the product names and expiration dates must be logged manually. When an item is removed from the refrigerator, the data must be entered as well. The convenience of knowing what’s in your refrigerator at any time may be outweighed by the inconvenience of keeping such meticulous records.

Another popular focus for the newly-developed technology involves reducing energy costs. For instance, the Fisher & Paykell Active Smart Refrigerator offers multiple energy-conserving features which, when combined, contribute to the overall efficiency of the product. The Active Smart electronic intelligence and multiple sensors monitor the internal temperature while a Variable Capacity Compressor ensures the refrigerator runs at its peak.

Energy-efficiency is particularly important when it comes to refrigerators because they are the only kitchen appliances that run 24-hours per day. By purchasing ecologically-friendly technology you’ll reduce your electricity bills and keep more money in your wallet.

Convenient Coffee Makers

A recent development in coffee consumption is the vacuum brewing system, as highlighted by the Clear Electric Santos coffee maker by Bodum. The machine promises to brew six to twelve cups of strong coffee within eight minutes using an easy-to-clean filtration system. This is an ideal appliance for people who love a full-bodied cup of joe.

The days of boiling whole pots of water just to have a single cup of coffee are over. The one cup coffee maker can brew your favorite gourmet tea or coffee in less than a minute, eliminating the need to prepare a whole pot. For people on-the-go, these fast brewing machines are a welcome addition to the home or workplace.

The single cup coffee maker is also a great energy saver. In the time it might take to heat up one pot of regular coffee or to drive over to Starbucks, a one cup coffee maker by Keurig can brew several differently flavored hot drinks in 40 seconds each. Another perk of this machine is the variety of drinks it can produce. Keurig provides customers with over 70 different coffee or tea “K-Cups” from which to choose. K-Cups are easy-to-insert dispensers, which fit neatly into the coffee company’s machine with little effort and no clean-up.

Multifunctional Ovens

Forget slaving over a hot stove for hours just to get dinner on the table. Thanks to new ovens with automatic time and temperature controls dinner can practically make itself. Want a meal to be ready by the time you get home? Simply place your favorite dish in the oven and let the appliance do the rest.

The Intelligent Oven by TMIO refrigerates food until the user activates the cooking function. The oven’s Internet connectivity allows you to control this feature remotely with your cell phone or computer. Meals are not only delicious, but perfectly timed for your convenience. Additional advances have made the product safer and more energy-efficient, making it both user- and environmentally-friendly.

For real fast food, look for appliances such as the Sharp High Speed Convection/Microwave Oven. A 5-pound roasted chicken would take up to 140 minutes or more in a standard oven but, with the new high-speed ovens, the same meal can be ready within 28 minutes. By using a mix of super-heated circulating air and microwave energy, meals cook up to 80 percent faster.

In a step that brings to mind scenes from a work of science-fiction, General Electric is among the companies developing ovens which respond to voice commands and recognize over 200 regional accents. Rather than pushing a pre-set button, key phrases would activate the already programmed cooking times and temperatures. Such technology may not be a long way off, but its price tag may prove to be beyond the reach of many consumers.

High-tech Microwaves

Trying to find quick and easy recipes? Put down the cookbook. You can easily download hundreds of recipes directly from your microwave with the push of a button.

Using the LG Lifestyle MG-5682NL microwave oven, you can download recipes or other cooking information from the company’s web site. Sharp also sells a microwave that downloads cooking instructions for various meals, then automatically programs the time and power settings required to zap your meal to perfection.

In a slight variation on the theme, a new microwave by Samsung is programmed to read cooking directions by scanning product bar codes with a special sensor. The microwave then pulls the specific cooking instructions off the Internet and cooks the meal accordingly.

Many models now come with cooking pre-sets for popular food items, such as popcorn or frozen meals. Simply press one of the clearly-labeled option buttons on the microwave’s touchpad and the appliance will automatically adjust the time and power level.

Another feature that you won’t want your microwave to be without is a moisture sensor. Microwaves heat food by using radio waves to excite the molecules. To prevent overcooking your food, the moisture sensor will calculate how much time is still needed to cook based on how long it took for the food to begin steaming.

Since the kitchen is a natural hub of activity for any household, a few small changes can mean big savings in more ways than one. These kitchen innovations will not only free up more of your time, but can help you save money on the monthly energy bills. A little efficiency can go a long way!

Keeping Baby Safe in the Kitchen

With scalding hot oil, boiling water, and the oven set at 450 degrees, the kitchen can be one of the most hazardous rooms in your house for your baby. One of the best ways to prevent an accident is to keep the baby out of the kitchen all together by using a baby gate. However for some this idea might not be practical. Therefore, there are other ways to make your kitchen a safe place for your baby.

Preventing Burns

• To help safeguard your child from opening the oven when in use, purchase an oven lock.

• Install childproof knob covers on your stove if your knobs are reachable.

• Installing a stove guard on your stove can protect those little ones from touching the hot stove. Stove guards are made of heat-resistant plastic, which angles out from the stove creating a barrier to help protect little hands.

• Turn the handles of pots and skillets around so baby cannot reach them.

• Use the back burners for cooking when possible.

• Be sure to set your water temperature to 120 degrees Fahrenheit or below or use anti-scalding devices.

Keep Sharp Objects Out of Reach

• Keep your dishwasher shut when not in use since it can contain sharp objects that can cut the baby.

• Keep other utensils and knives out of reach of children.

• Never leave scissors, knives or other sharp objects on counter within reach.

Other Areas to Childproof

• Place locks on appliances such as refrigerator, microwave and dishwasher.

• Keep electrical appliances such as toaster and blenders out of reach as curious babies may try and plug them in.

• Keep all cleaning supplies locked up or in an area inaccessible to baby.

• Place locks on cabinets and drawers.

• Put outlet covers in any outlets.

Don’t Forget…

• Avoid using small magnets on your refrigerator as these can fall down and baby can choke on them.

• Keep cling wrap, large baggies and plastic bags out of reach as they pose a suffocation hazard for children.

• Don’t have any stools or ladders in the kitchen as these can provide a vehicle for a child to reach things they shouldn’t.

• Keep a lid on your trashcan or keep the trash out of reach. Trash can contain any number of hazards such as sharp metal can lids, plastic bags, or glass bottles.

• No place is ever completely childproof, so never leave child unattended in the kitchen.

Keep them Entertained

You spend a lot of time in your kitchen cooking and preparing food and then cleaning up. So keep the baby entertained while you are there and they are less likely to play with things they shouldn’t. Set aside at least one cabinet for your child to open and explore. Pick a cabinet that’s not too close to the stove and oven, and fill it with safe but interesting objects, such as lightweight saucepans, wooden spoons, foil pie plates, and empty yogurt containers. Surprise them by changing the contents from time to time.

Greater Noida

Prices of properties in noida are increasing very rapidly year by year. Bus at the shelter doesnot affects the speed of other traffic plying on the main road. All electricity and data cabling; besides drain networks are underground, so the well-laid road network is free of all protruding encumbrances. Managed by a private company the solid waste is segregated at sources into biodegradable and non- biodegradable components.

The air ambience in greater NOIDA is also of a superior quality, perhaps because the only industries that are allowed under the master Plans are of a non-polluting kind, meaning a lot of IT industries. Their presences in the vicinity anyway a blend in with the Authority’s ambitious after Mumbai and Bangalore. Host of companies have set up their base here, namely, LG Electronics, Moser Baer, Videocon, Asian Paints Ltd, T-Series, Nicco Batteries Ltd, HPCL Ltd. and Honda Siel Cars India Ltd. to name few.

Easy availability of land affordable land prices (see the inset box) good ground water and power supply, besides the availability of quality urban infrastructure including housing and the location of several IT and engineering colleges for easy souring of trained human resources is what makes Greater NOIDA an attractive destination over NOIDA and Gurgaon in the NCR region.

Greater NOIDA has also been identified as the ideal location for a second international airport to serve the NCR belt (which will be connected to Taj Expressway). Mean while, work has already commenced on Reliance’s Dadri gas-based power plant in Greater NOIDA. The administration claims that new connections are installed within a 15-day time frame and complaints are addressed within 30-60 minutes.

In terms of telecom, Greater NOIDA is way ahead of its cousins besides being connected to the National Telecom Network o an optical fiber cable and digital microwave system, high-speed data communication services have been made possible by Reliance Infocomm, TATA Telesarvies, RPG enterprise and Power Grid Corporation. A broadband connectivity of 650 MBPS is provided and the city is being wired by OFC cable for Internet, Cable TV and future e-commerce and e-governance services.

And although malls have yet to come up, for quiet entertainment, there are outlets like Steller Gymkhana, Heritage Club, Sports Complex Amusement Park (232 acres) and a few other recreation alcenters. All the above is the good news. Now, for a spot of the bad: the biggest drawback with Greater NOIDA is that the occupancy there is yet to cross the psychologically safe 10 per cent benchmark, eight years. But if you wait that long the opportunity of buying a good piece of property might just slip out of your hands. The prices have already climbed:

Connectivity with Delhi is an other issue, but if you take six lanes Expressway, which is already laid and operational, it’s just about an hour’s drive away from the railway station and the IGI Airport via the DND Bridge, where you are unlikely to hit any traffic bottle- neck. All things considered, if you are still not sure about Greater NOIDA’s real estate prospects, do follow our advice and take your child for that visit to a great urban site and checks the ground conditions for yourself.

Cooking tips for microwave owen

The food is ready at a pretty quick time in the microwave owen. However some find the whole machine an extra care idiot box while cooking their favourite dish for an important occasion. Here are some tips and thumb rules to help you convert your favourite recipes into microwave. Before we begin, let us understand how the microwave works. A microwave oven is a device in which food is cooked by the heat produced out of the absorption of microwave energy from water molecules in the food. Microwave ovens operate by agitating the water molecules in the food, causing them to vibrate, which produces heat.

Microwave cooking evaporates less moisture from the food. So reduce the liquid specified in your conventional recipe by ¼ th cup of water from each glass to adapt to microwave. For instance if you are supposed to use 4 cups of water, you’ll need only 3 in the microwave. Arrange food in dish so that the thicker part is on the outside and the thinner part inside for more even cooking. Microwave cooking increases the flavour of herbs and spices. Therefore, make sure to reduce half the amount of spices specified.

Foods containing liquid, sugar and fat cook faster in the device. So reduce the cooking time by 1/4 of conventional cooking and then gradually increase until you obtain the desired result. It also enhances the salt flavouring in food. So reduce the amount of salt by one-third. You can add salt even after the food is cooked.  Keep your microwave clean from inside as if left unclean it may spoil your food ,

Never microwave the dishes covered in Alluminium foil or any metallic material . It may generate sparks.  The microwaves can only penetrate food 1- 1/2 inches so larger dishes need the vibrating molecules to move from the outside edges to the center of the food for it to be cooked.  To distribute heat evenly, use a dish with a cone in the center.

Arrange food in dish so that the thicker part is on the outside and the thinner part inside for more even cooking.  Add low fat cheese and other toppings near the end of cooking to keep the top from becoming tough or soggy.

While cooking in the microwave make sure that the dish is covered properly with a lid or plastic wrap.  Always make provisions for the steam to escape from the covered dish. So you can make holes on the plastic wrap or loosen the lid while cooking.

A thumb rule in microwave cooking that you must follow is the ‘6 minutes per pound rule’. According to this rule 6 minutes per pound will cook most foods including meat, poultry, fruits and vegetables. Seafood gets cooked pretty fast in the microwave owen.

Kitchen Hazards to Watch Out For When Cooking With Kids

The kitchen is a great place to let your imagination run wild and have fun. More so if you are cooking with your kids. Though we must keep in mind their safety always comes first. The kitchen can potentially be a dangerous place. There are some considerations to take into account to make it a safe environment. If you want to know what to watch out for read on.

Invisible Danger: Bacteria

The presence of dangerous bacteria could make someone sick. It is important to know how to handle foods properly to avoid the spreading of bacteria, which can cause food poisoning. So, there are a few things you have to take into account before you start creating all kinds of mouth-watering goodies. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and very warm water. Your hands can spread bacteria and get into the food that you are preparing. After touching raw meat, poultry or fish you should be extremely careful and wash your hands thoroughly. Meat can contain deadly bacteria called e-coli. To avoid contaminating other food, it is important to also wash counter tops well with anti-bacterial spray, as well as chopping boards, knives, and any other utensils that raw meat touches. This will ensure that the food you prepare won’t make you, or anyone else that eats it, ill.

Sharp Objects

Knives are necessary tools when you’re working in the kitchen. However, if they are not handled and cared for properly, they can become very dangerous. When using a knife, always cut away from your body. Otherwise the knife can slip and cut you. To keep the knife from slipping in your hand, keep knives clean, including the handle. When washing and drying knives, be sure to keep the cutting edge away from your hands. Also, put them away in the proper area when you are finished using them.
Knives are not the only sharp things found in the kitchen. Beware and be careful with the following objects as well: scissors, blades of a blender and mixer (these appliances should be unplugged before touching the blades), can openers, broken glass (including chipped dishes), and potato peeler. If you respect sharp tools and handle them properly, they will help you get the job done without any casualties.

Burning

There are many hazards in the kitchen that are caused by hot things. Plenty of caution is number one when using the stove, oven, or microwave. Always use oven mitts or hot pads when picking up things that are hot. Keep pot handles pointed to the back of the stove to avoid bumping a handle and getting splashed with hot liquid. With microwaves, always use microwave safe cookware. When frying foods, remember to use a splatter screen. Always keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen and make sure it is working properly. If a fire extinguisher is not available, keep a container of baking soda or salt nearby when cooking. Either of these are handy to smother a small grease fire.

Make safety your number one priority. Stay safe by practicing good kitchen safety. Keep in mind carelessness can cause severe injury. Before engaging in cooking classes for kids, go over the basics and make sure they understand the importance of safety.
